Couple Uses Baseball Bat, Fists to Fight Off Bear That Broke Into Home

(Photo Credit: bodsa / Pixabay) A Colorado couple defended themselves with a baseball bat after a hungry bear broke into their home on Monday night. The large animal and its cub went inside the couple’s home in Pine, Colorado, at approximately 8:30 p.m. local time on Monday, KMGH-TV reported. The two homeowners heard strange sounds inside their house and when they went to investigate, they found the mama bear and cub eating bread, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that was shared on Facebook. Once the couple spotted the two bears, the mother bear attacked the 71-year-old man, who punched the bear, while his wife struck it with a baseball bat. According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), the fight between the massive creature and the man was described as “a boxing match.” After a couple of minutes, the bears ran through the screen door they used to go inside the home. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said the man was cut and scratched on his face, arms, and chest by the bear, however, he was not seriously injured and was treated at the scene. His wife didn’t sustain any injuries from the attack. CPW was immediately notified after the incident and used dogs to search for the two bears from Monday night to Tuesday morning. After conducting a search until midnight local time and resuming a follow-up search at 5:30 a.m. local time, CPW wildlife officials and USDA Wildlife officials tracked the mother bear and found her roughly 900 yards away from the home at approximately 7 a.m. local time. According to CPW polices, if a bear attacks a human, it has to be put down. Officials euthanized the mother bear and they couldn’t find the cub at the scene, Fox News noted. The bear that was put down will be sent to the University of Wyoming Forensics Lab, where it will be tested to confirm that it was the same bear involved in Monday night’s attack. Wildlife officials notified the public about the incident, stating that bears are very active at this time of year as they try to consume large quantities of food before they hibernate in the winter months. CPW said bears will easily come back to areas where they find food, including campgrounds, homes, and vehicles.
