Going green: Ethiopia’s bid to plant four billion trees

These days whenever Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed appears in public, he removes his jacket, rolls up his sleeves, grabs a shovel and gets to planting a tree. Abiy is leading by example as Ethiopia plans to plant a mind-boggling four billion trees by October, as part of a global movement to restore forests to help fight climate change and protect resources. On Monday, state employees were given the day off as Abiy sought to get the rest of the country involved, and the government claimed a “record-breaking” 350 million trees were planted in only one day. Twitter Users Urge Debate Moderators To Ask Bill De Blasio About Eric Garner

Don Lemon’s question to presidential candidates about how to “heal the racist divide in America” was the closest the 10 Democrats in Detroit Tuesday night got to debating the epidemic of police brazenly killing Black people without consequence. But that wasn’t the case last month when an even larger group of Democratic White House hopefuls singled out South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg and his [mis]handling of a controversial shooting of a Black man. So why then has New York Mayor Bill de Blasio avoided the same level of scrutiny during his lone debate appearance on June 26. I am, of course, referring to the NYPD’s public execution of Eric Garner, a killing recorded and filmed on video for the world to see how little the city’s police force values Black life. Prior to the last debate, a farce of an NYPD administrative trial for Daniel Pantaleo, the cop who employed the illegal and ultimately deadly chokehold on Garner, ended without any resolution. Since the last debate, U.S. Attorney General Bill Barr declined to bring federal charges against Pantaleo. The very next day was the five-year anniversary of what many people have called a murder. Throughout it all, de Blasio has been mum. As Pantaleo remains a very high paid member of the NYPD, people hoping for any semblance of justice and hoping Garner’s death would not be in vain were looking to de Blasio to at the very least fire the officer. But de Blasio hasn’t acted. In fact, New York City Public Advocate and former City Councilmember Jumaane Williams penned a scathing, damning timeline recounting at least 11 times de Blasio “failed to hold Officer Daniel Pantaleo to account.” Should the topic of how to “heal the racist divide in America” come up again in the second installment of the second round of Democratic debates on Wednesday night, why on earth wouldn’t anybody bring up Garner as an example of the persistent trend of police killing unarmed Black people? @JeffSmithMO A question to @NYCMayor re #EricGarner must be asked tonight. Ms Carr deserves it. Cc @harrysiegel @CNN https://t.co/AHWPCPmARq — Christina Greer (@Dr_CMGreer) July 31, 2019 Twitter users asked the same question in the hours ahead of Wednesday night’s debate, saying in part that Garner’s mother, Gwen Carr, deserves to be treated with the dignity that has been missing from the ordeal. To @BilldeBlasio Why is #EricGarner murderer still employed at the NYC police department. #DemDebateMI https://t.co/5DFjgHY6Jl — Barbara Patterson (@patte151) July 30, 2019 While some gave De Blasio glowing marks for his performance in the first debate, others took umbrage at how he used his half-Black son to redirect the conversation on race — twice — to himself despite appearing to distance himself from the Garner case. Why can’t you speak up for #EricGarner? He was murdered on your watch and you can’t even say the cop who killed him should be fired. And yet you talked about your son in the debate. Explain yourself. — Victoria Brownworth (@VABVOX) July 20, 2019 But the bottom line is that what’s good for the goose is good for the gander. Buttigieg may not be handling the shooting of 54-year-old Eric Logan in the most ideal way, but he does appear to be addressing it. In fact, he was forced to do so on the debate stage on national TV. Hey @BilldeBlasio #ICantBreathe#EricGarner#NoJustice#NoPeace cc: @donlemon https://t.co/FV7Be3IgxQ — SoniaCarmen (@SoniCubed) July 30, 2019 That’s why Wednesday night is the perfect chance for de Blasio to also explain himself and his inactions to the country that he has unrealistic ambitions of leading. ‘Historic’ Birth: Artificially Conceived Southern White Rhino Born at San Diego Zoo

A southern white rhino calf conceived through artificial insemination bonds with its mother at San Diego Zoo Safari Park. The rhino calf was the first successful artificial insemination birth of a southern white rhino in North America. (Photo Credit: Ken Bohn / San Diego Zoo) In what is being called a “historic” birth, a southern white rhino calf conceived through hormone-induced ovulation and artificial insemination was born Sunday at San Diego Zoo. The healthy male calf was born to mother, Victoria, who remained calm during the 30-minute labor, according to a San Diego Zoo Global press release. Artificial insemination of southern white rhinos has rarely been successful; this is the first successful artificial insemination birth of a southern white rhino in North America. “All of us at San Diego Zoo Global are elated with the arrival of this special rhino calf,” said Barbara Durrant, Ph.D., Henshaw endowed director of Reproductive Sciences, San Diego Zoo Global. “We are so pleased Victoria and the calf are doing well. She is very attentive to her baby, and the calf is up and walking, and nursing frequently. Not only are we thankful for a healthy calf, but this birth is significant, as it also represents a critical step in our effort to save the northern white rhino from the brink of extinction.” Victoria was artificially inseminated with frozen semen from southern white rhino Maoto in March 2018 following hormone-induced ovulation. Victoria carried her calf for 493 days. This is the first successful artificial insemination birth of a southern white rhino in North America and brings us one step closer to saving the northern white rhino from extinction. https://t.co/NuT2AIVAw2 pic.twitter.com/Qnf2KHyagY — San Diego Zoo Safari Park (@sdzsafaripark) July 29, 2019 According to he Zoo, Victoria and her calf will remain off-exhibit to the public for an undisclosed period of time, to allow them to bond. The calf will eventually be introduced to the other five female rhinos at the Nikita Kahn Rhino Rescue Center— including Amani, also pregnant through artificial insemination and due to give birth in September or October. The artificial insemination and successful birth of the rhino calf represents a critical step in the organization’s ongoing work to develop the scientific knowledge required to genetically recover the northern white rhino, a distant subspecies of the southern white rhino. Only two northern white rhinos currently remain on Earth and, unfortunately, both are female. Animal care staff reported that Victoria did extremely well and remained calm during the 30-minute labor. The calf is nursing well, and mother and baby are bonding in a quiet nursing setting. pic.twitter.com/qsyOQMLmRY — San Diego Zoo Safari Park (@sdzsafaripark) July 29, 2019 Scientists need to accomplish multiple steps to produce a northern white rhino. One of the first steps completed involved sequencing the genome of the northern white rhino to clarify the extent of genetic divergence from its closest relative, the southern white rhino. Another step requires conversion of cells preserved from 12 individual northern white rhinos in the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research’s Frozen Zoo to stem cells that could develop into sperm and eggs. But while the techniques still need to be perfected and the reproductive systems of rhinos are extremely complex, researchers are hopeful that a northern white rhino calf could be born from these processes within 10 to 20 years. This work also may be applied to other rhino species, including critically endangered Sumatran and Javan rhinos. Russia declares state of emergency as wildfires rage across area size of Belgium

Russia on Monday declared a state of emergency in two regions of Siberia as wildfires rage across 12,000 square miles of countryside. Terrified residents in the Krasnoyarsk and Irkutsk regions called on the state to act as flames engulfed an area the size of Belgium. There are few inhabited zones in the path of the inferno but smoke has blanketed major cities in Siberia and the Far East, making it hard to breathe and posing health risks for the population. Over 720,000 people have signed a petition on Change.Org calling for a state of emergency to be declared across the whole of Siberia in order to draw more forces and state funding to battle the wildfires that have erupted in the past month. Residents of the affected areas have been posting photos of burning forests and smog-covered cities and villages. Local authorities have however cited at 2015 decree by the Ministry of Natural Resources that allows them not to extinguish wildfires if they do not pose a direct threat to settlements. Fire-fighting can also be avoided if the cost of the operation is higher than the estimated damage. The governor of Krasnoyarsk, Alexander Uss, defended the government’s reluctance to put out the fires by comparing them to winter blizzards. He said that it can be “pointless and sometimes even harmful” to try and extinguish flames in unpopulated areas. More than 11 million hectares have already been affected by wildfires this season, Greenpeace Russia said in a statement on Friday, adding that blazes continue to spread around hundreds of thousands of hectares every day. The environmental group warned that it was no longer a regional problem and more measures should be taken. It is not immediately clear if a state of emergency in some of the affected areas will help contain the wildfires. European scientists earlier raised concerns over unprecedented fires that started sooner than usual in the Arctic this summer season releasing huge amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The fires have been caused by record high temperatures combined with lightning and strong winds. Source: https://ift.tt/2MxlrZ0 Droolin’ Dog sniffed out this story and shared it with you. ‘Powell has been Trumped’: The Fed steps into Trump’s trade war

In the case of Donald Trump vs. the U.S. Federal Reserve, the president of the United States is likely to secure a winning verdict this week. Central bank officials are expected to cut interest rates for the first time since the global financial crisis not because Trump demanded it. Instead, they will move in part because the president’s bruising trade policy has helped fuel a global manufacturing slowdown and injected deep uncertainty into executive suites around the world. Fed Chairman Jerome Powell won’t directly say it directly after his meetings Tuesday and Wednesday. But the central bank will reverse course at least in part to save the Trump economy from Trump. “There is just no question that Powell has been ‘Trumped’ here,” said Ed Yardeni, president and chief investment strategist of Yardeni Research Inc. “Just read Powell’s comments during his recent congressional testimony and trade comes up eight times in the context of weighing on the global economy. All Trump had to do was keep up geopolitical trade uncertainty for a while and he’d get the Fed to cut rates.” Trump continued to hammer away at the Fed in public comments and tweets on Monday, arguing that a series of rate hikes over the last three years slowed what would otherwise be a much faster economy. “The Fed ‘raised’ way too early and way too much,” Trump tweeted. “Their quantitative tightening was another big mistake. While our Country is doing very well, the potential wealth creation that was missed, especially when measured against our debt, is staggering.” But the data does not really support his argument. Interest rates, adjusted for inflation, remain historically low. And consumer spending, which is where higher rates might slow things down, remains the dominant engine of growth. It is on the corporate investment side — where the 2017 tax cut was supposed to unleash a wave of growth — where conditions have stalled. The U.S. GDP report out last week showed growth slowing to a 2.1 percent pace in the second quarter from 3.1 percent in the first. Most of the gains came from consumer spending, which rose a strong 4.3 percent. Business investment declined by 0.6 percent, the first such drop since the first quarter of 2016. Exports, a key metric for Trump’s promise to reinvigorate American manufacturing, plunged by 5.2 percent and imports rose, increasing the trade deficit. Trump administration officials say the president is taking a longer-term view of trade relationships and hopes to eventually win concessions from China on important issues including forced technology transfer and intellectual property theft. They also contend the Fed went too far in rate hikes. National Economic Council Director Larry Kudlow said in a recent interview that the Fed should make an “insurance” cut in rates to prevent any slowdown and give the tax cuts more time to work. Meanwhile, signs of a declining manufacturing sector in the U.S. and abroad continue to pile up. The J.P. Morgan Global Manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index, or PMI, reading recently moved into contraction territory for the first time since 2012. Of the 30 nations issuing a PMI report for June, 18 registered a contraction including China, Japan, the UK and Germany. In the United States, the Institute for Supply Management index for manufacturing dropped for a third straight month in June to 51.7, still indicating expansion but at the weakest level since October 2016, before the trade battles began. Fresh manufacturing data for the U.S. and China will come out later this week. Job growth in manufacturing companies has also slowed from 22,000 new jobs per month last year to 8,000 per month this year. The Fed said earlier this month that U.S. industrial production was technically in recession, meaning two straight quarters of contraction. Powell on multiple occasions has cited concerns that trade fights were hurting growth and denting confidence, while being careful not to antagonize Trump directly. “What we’re seeing is business fixed investment … it’s really slowed down now,” Powell said in congressional testimony earlier this month. “There’s no perfect way to identify these things, but we do connect that to trade policy uncertainty and also uncertainty on global growth, weaker manufacturing around the world.” The Fed has made clear that trade tensions loom large in its worries about risks to the economy. Company investments in long-term projects like factories and technology picked up during the first half of 2018 in the wake of corporate tax cuts, but those investments have faded much faster than expected. The central bank’s business contacts tell the Fed they aren’t sure where to put their money because they’re not sure where tariffs might show up next. “If you’re a manufacturing company in our economy, of any size, chances are pretty good that your supply chain goes across national borders,” Powell said in his testimony. “That supply chain is really part of how you do business, and you just assume that it’s working and you can focus on your clients. When your supply chain is called into question — we hear this a lot from businesses — when it’s called into question, you pull back.” Powell said trade uncertainty “spiked” in May. Though he didn’t explain why, that coincides with the president’s threat to put tariffs on Mexico over the ongoing migration crisis. Trump’s tweet on Mexico spooked investors because it threw the future of the renegotiated NAFTA deal into doubt and raised the possibility of retaliatory tariffs from the U.S.’s third-largest trading partner. The central bank has also quantified the direct impacts of the trade battles, though those are less a factor in the growth picture. In its semiannual monetary policy report to Congress earlier this month, the central bank estimated that new tariffs might have lowered U.S. imports by roughly $70 billion. The impact of Trump’s trade wars are starting to weighing on some corporate earnings like those of equipment maker Caterpillar, Apple and chip-maker Nvidia, among others. Economists fear it could get worse. “Trump’s trade policies are starting to show up in corporate balance sheets,” said Joseph Brusuelas, chief economist at consulting firm RSM. “In the third quarter you’d expect to see profit-margin compression across a wider array of earnings reports and the consumer will feel it, which could cause a pullback in consumption. That’s where the problem is for the White House.” Businesses are also becoming less bullish about future growth, in part because they are uncertain how they will be impacted by tariff policy. The National Association for Business Economics on Monday reported that in its latest survey, members said they believed growth will slow and corporate sales and profits will decline this year. Inside the survey, 56 percent of goods-producing firms said they had altered supply chains in response to trade policy and 38 percent said they’d delayed investments. The Fed will likely step into this slowdown scenario on Wednesday with a rate cut of at least a quarter point and perhaps as much as a half a point. Trump already predicted on Monday that whatever it does will not be enough for him. Economists, meanwhile, question whether a Fed rate cut will do very much to alter the economic picture. Part of the Fed’s rationale for a cut is that the inflation central banks feared would arrive with the jobless rate at historic lows has not arrived. In that sense, the pivot to cuts will be a big win for progressives who have long argued for Powell and the central bank to allow the economy to run hotter. But with borrowing costs still very low, it’s not likely to change underlying corporate behavior, which may only respond to a more certain policy environment. “The biggest risk to growth for the economy is the uncertainty as to where economic policy is headed,” said Steven Ricchiuto, chief U.S. economist at Mizuho Securities USA. “And it’s not as if the Fed can fix some of these problems related to uncertainty caused by the administration and these global-related issues.” There is also some fear that the Fed cutting interest rates will keep investors searching for investments that offer a higher rate of return. These so called “high yield” investments include lower-grade corporate debt and high-risk loans that have risen in volume in recent years and could create significant problems if a sharper slowdown forces defaults. “The lack of credit is not the problem in the global economy,” Yardeni said. “Central bankers are convinced they can fix problems, when in fact they can’t. And the reach for yield is starting to get borderline insane with the lack of covenants in bonds and loans. I’m starting to get a little feeling of deja vu all over again.” Article originally published on POLITICO Magazine Source: https://ift.tt/2MpdCor Droolin’ Dog sniffed out this story and shared it with you. Uber lays off 400 as cost-cutting efforts ramp up

Uber is laying off about 25% of its 1,200-person strong marketing department in an effort to slash costs and make operations more efficient following its public debut and first quarter losses of $1 billion. The layoffs were first reported by The New York Times. About 400 people in Uber’s marketing department were laid off across its 75 offices globally, according to the company. Uber’s latest public global headcount was 24,494 global employees as of March 31, 2019. Jill Hazelbaker, who leads marketing and public affairs at Uber, and CEO Dara Khosrowshahi told employees Monday that the marketing team would have a more centralized structure, according to an internal email viewed by TechCrunch. The reorganized marketing team will be under the leadership of Mike Strickman, vice president of performance marketing, who joined from TripAdvisor a month ago, and another soon-to-be-hired head of global marketing. Strickman will oversee performance marketing, CRM and analytics, while the global marketing executive will manage the heads of product marketing, brand, Eats, B2B, research, planning and creative. The layoffs are the latest cost-driven changes to occur at the company since it went public in May. Many of Uber’s teams are “too big, which creates overlapping work, makes for unclear decision owners, and can lead to mediocre results,” Khosrowshahi said in an email sent to employees and shared with TechCrunch. “As a company, we can do more to keep the bar high, and expect more of ourselves and each other.” Khosrowshahi said the restructuring aims to put the marketing team, and the company, back on track. “Today, there’s a general sense that while we’ve grown fast, we’ve slowed down. You can see it in Pulse Survey feedback and All Hands questions, and you can feel it in much of our day-to-day work. This happens naturally as companies get bigger, but it is something we need to address, and quickly,” he wrote. Uber’s first quarterly earnings report as a publicly traded company gave a snapshot of a growing business with stunning operational losses. Uber’s revenue grew 20%, to $3.1 billion, compared to $2.5 billion in the same period last year. And its gross bookings rose 34%, to $14.6 billion, in the first quarter, with Uber Eats driving much of that growth. But its loss from operations exploded 116%, to $1 billion, in the first quarter compared to the same year-ago period. In June, chief operating officer Barney Harford and chief marketing officer Rebecca Messina stepped down as part of an organizational shakeup put into motion just a month after the ride-hailing company went public. At the time, Khosrowshahi explained in an email to employees that the changes were prompted by his decision to more directly control core parts of the business. Khosrowshahi told employees that he wants to be even more involved in the day-to-day operations of its biggest businesses, the core platform of Rides and Eats, and has decided they should report directly to him. Watch: This Deep-Sea Squid Has Never Been Filmed Alive Before… Until Now

The Asperoteuthis mangoldae squid was seen alive for the first time during a survey of the Jarvis Seamount in the Pacific Ocean. Researchers think this unusual squid’s tail may help it mimic other animals. (Photo Credit: Nautilus Live) Marine scientists have filmed the first-ever sighting of an unusual deep-sea squid in the Pacific Ocean earlier this month. The squid was spotted hovering above the seafloor near Jarvis Seamount in the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument, according to researchers of the 2019 Nautilus expedition. “[On July 5, 2019], diving at 930m depth on Jarvis Seamount, E/V Nautilus and ROV Hercules encountered a very unusual squid swimming just above the bottom. At first, it looked like a long, narrow squid with something stuck on it,” said Dr. Michael Vecchione, NOAA National Systematics Lab and National Museum of Natural History. “The ‘something’ was actually part of the squid, a tail extending beyond the fins and effectively doubling the length of the animal.” The squid was an Asperoteuthis mangoldae, a recently discovered deep-sea species that had never been seen alive — until now. According to Vecchione, the genus Asperoteuthis is characterized by a strange tail and unusual tentacles. The tail, which is stiffened by a rod-like structure throughout it length, has sheets of tissue on both sides. The flaps are sometimes called “secondary fins” but, don’t actually function as fins. Squid fins, like the normal “primary” fins on this squid, flap or undulate to propel the animal and can be used to steer. Scientists are not clear on the function of the tail, but Vecchione said it seems to change the appearance of the squid. In the video captured by the ROV Hercules, the squid’s tail appear to double its size. The squid in the video also demonstrates how it can swim while pushing or pulling its large tail. (Photo Credit: Nautilus Live) “When first seen by the ROV, the tissue of the tail is fully deployed,” Vecchione said. “After a short while, the squid first swims rapidly forward (arms first), collapsing the tail tissue around the rod-like structure. Then it reverses course and swims rapidly backward (tail first, which is typical for high-speed swimming by a squid). While it swims backward the tissue stays tightly held close to the rod, similar to a sail furled on the boom of a schooner.” Vecchione added: “As the squid swims erratically to escape, even changing color and inking once, the tail stays furled, greatly reducing its drag. Therefore, jetting forward to furl the tail seems to be the first step in the squid’s complex escape maneuvers.” The survey of the Jarvis Seamount was part of the 2019 Nautilus expedition that set out to explore the deep ocean waters of the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument, near Kingman Reef, Palmyra Atoll and Jarvis Island, which are among the most remote U.S.-controlled territories. Earlier in the expedition, scientists aboard the Nautilus also spotted a see-through piglet squid near the Palmyra Atoll and a dumbo octopus near Kingman Reef. Capital One’s breach was inevitable, because we did nothing after Equifax

Another day, another massive data breach. This time it’s the financial giant and credit card issuer Capital One, which revealed on Monday a credit file breach affecting 100 million Americans and 6 million Canadians. Consumers and small businesses affected are those who obtained one of the company’s credit cards dating back to 2005. That includes names, addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth, self-reported income and more credit card application data — including over 140,000 Social Security numbers in the U.S., and more than a million in Canada. The FBI already has a suspect in custody. Seattle resident and software developer Paige A. Thompson, 33, was arrested and detained pending trial. She’s been accused of stealing data by breaching a web application firewall, which was supposed to protect it. Sound familiar? It should. Just last week, credit rating giant Equifax settled for more than $575 million over a date breach it had — and hid from the public for several months — two years prior. Why should we be surprised? Equifax faced zero fallout until its eventual fine. All talk, much bluster, but otherwise little action. Equifax’s chief executive Richard Smith “retired” before he was fired, allowing him to keep his substantial pension packet. Lawmakers grilled the company but nothing happened. An investigation launched by the former head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the governmental body responsible for protecting consumers from fraud, declined to pursue the company. The FTC took its sweet time to issue its fine — which amounted to about 20% of the company’s annual revenue for 2018. For one of the most damaging breaches to the U.S. population since the breach of classified vetting files at the Office of Personnel Management in 2015, Equifax got off lightly. Legislatively, nothing has changed. Equifax remains as much of a “victim” in the eyes of the law as it was before — technically, but much to the ire of the millions affected who were forced to freeze their credit as a result. Mark Warner, a Democratic senator serving Virginia, along with his colleague since turned presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren, was tough on the company, calling for it to do more to protect consumer data. With his colleagues, he called on the credit agencies to face penalties to the top brass and extortionate fines to hold the companies accountable — and to send a message to others that they can’t play fast and loose with our data again. But Congress didn’t bite. Warner told TechCrunch at the time that there was “a failure of the company, but also of lawmakers” for not taking action. Lo and behold, it happened again. Without a congressional intervention, Capital One is likely to face largely the same rigmarole as Equifax did. Blame the lawmakers all you want. They had their part to play in this. But fool us twice, shame on the credit companies for not properly taking action in the first place. The Equifax incident should have sparked a fire under the credit giants. The breach was the canary in the coal mine. We watched and waited to see what would happen as the canary’s lifeless body emerged — but, much to the American public’s chagrin, no action came of it. The companies continued on with the mentality that “it could happen to us, but probably won’t.” It was always going to happen again unless there was something to force the companies to act. Companies continue to vacuum up our data — knowingly and otherwise — and don’t do enough to protect it. As much as we can have laws to protect consumers from this happening again, these breaches will continue so long as the companies continue to collect our data and not take their data security responsibilities seriously. We had an opportunity to stop these kinds of breaches from happening again, yet in the two years passed we’ve barely grappled with the basic concepts of internet security. All we have to show for it is a meager fine. Thompson faces five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. Everyone else faces just another major intrusion into their personal lives. Not at the hands of the hacker per se, but the companies that collect our data — with our consent and often without — and take far too many liberties with it. Let’s block ads! (Why?)
