Skull asteroid returns for another flyby, but it’ll miss Halloween this year

The skull-shaped asteroid that first made headlines in 2015 has returned, as foretold, for another flyby. Klobuchar: ‘Very concerned’ about White House limiting Kavanaugh investigation

Sen. Amy Klobuchar said Sunday that she is “very concerned” the White House will limit the scope of the FBI investigation into allegations of sexual assault against Brett Kavanaugh, despite assurances from White House officials that the terms of the inquiry are being set by the Senate. The Minnesota Democrat said her worry is based on news reports. Klobuchar sits on the Senate Judiciary Committee where one of Kavanaugh’s accusers, Christine Blasey Ford, testified Thursday, “I’m very concerned about this because the White House should not be allowed to micromanage an FBI investigation,” Klobuchar said on CNN’s “State of the Union,” also calling on her Republican colleagues to ensure the investigation is fair and thorough. She said she was “really stunned” by an exchange between her and Kavanaugh at the hearing on Thursday in which she asked him if he ever drank to the point of not remembering and he combatively turned the question back on her. “This is basically a job interview for the highest court in the land,” she said. “One idea here is he simply was drinking more than he was saying over this time period and that he didn’t remember what happened. ... I was actually trying to get to the truth.” Kavanaugh denied ever blacking out from alcohol, but Klobuchar said she questioned if he was telling the truth. “It doesn’t quite make sense to me, because first of all, you have these other people from parts of his life who have said he was belligerent when he was drunk,” she said. source: https://ift.tt/2zG2won #Headlines by: jklimas@politico.com (Jacqueline Klimas) Original Post: https://ift.tt/2zG2won https://ift.tt/2Nc3MmC

Samuel L. Jackson responds to viral mashup of Kavanaugh testimony and 'Pulp Fiction' scenes

Samuel L. Jackson appreciates a good laugh, but finds absolutely no humor in President Trump's Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh. On Friday, the production company Elara Pictures posted a video of Kavanaugh's testimony spliced with the several of the actor's scenes from Pulp Fiction. It made the rounds on social media and gave many tired, discouraged people around the world, including Jackson himself, a much-needed laugh. After the actor saw the recut Tarantino movie, he decided to share his thoughts on Twitter and let the world know that while he thinks the video is funny, he's taking Kavanaugh very seriously. Lyft unveils second annual diversity report

Lyft has released its second annual diversity report outlining the gender and racial breakdown of its 4,000-person workforce. At a glance, little has changed from last year’s report, which was the first time the $15 billion ride-hailing company disclosed its diversity stats. Forty percent of Lyft’s workforce is female, a slight decrease from last year’s 42 percent, and about 33 percent of its leadership is female, a 3 percent decrease year-over-year. Fifty-two percent of its employees are white, down from 63 percent. Its leadership team remains mostly white and male. It’s worth noting that Lyft roughly doubled in size in the last 12 months, according to Nilka Thomas, its vice president of talent and inclusion. The company is growing rapidly as it prepares for a 2019 initial public offering. This week, reports emerged that it was in talks with J.P. Morgan to lead its IPO and that it had more than doubled revenue in the first six months of 2018 to $909 million on a net loss of $373 million. [gallery ids="1722278,1722279,1722280,1722281,1722282,1722283"] The company has made several notable hires this year, too, including a whole bunch of former Tesla employees. Thomas, for her part, joined Lyft in March just months before the company brought in another $600 million and continued its hiring craze. She’s responsible for global hiring, diversity and inclusion, workplace policy and employee relations. Thomas told TechCrunch that considering such immense growth at Lyft this past year, she’s pleased with the latest report. “In hypergrowth, what tends to happen is you have a bias toward speed and diversity can suffer,” Thomas said. Before joining Lyft, Thomas spent 13 years at Google, most recently as its director of global diversity, integrity and governance. In the six months since she was hired, Thomas has helped launch an internal database that gives employees access to the racial and gender diversity data of different teams across the company, a sort of diversity report card updated in real time. Thomas says the goal is to make sure a manager’s numbers don’t get lost in the bigger picture and to keep them accountable as Lyft continues to hire. Thomas has also maintained a focus on Lyft’s culture. Though it’s great for companies like Lyft or Uber to disclose diversity data, it means nothing if they aren’t providing employees from underrepresented backgrounds resources to succeed. With that in mind, Thomas has piloted a program called R.I.C.H. — Race, Identity, Culture and Heritage — a group for Lyft employees to learn how to have difficult conversations surrounding race in the workplace. “In the era of #MeToo, we want to make sure that we’ve gone beyond what our compliance obligations are,” she said. “We are really sensitive to what can happen to marginalized and vulnerable groups.” Last year, Lyft was recognized by the Human Rights Campaign for its work on corporate equality. The company has implemented a Gender Inclusion and Affirmation Policy that promises to provide an inclusive environment for transgender people and supports various nonprofits through its Round Up & Donate program. Last month, Girls Who Code, an organization focused on closing the gender gap in tech, announced it had raised $1 million from Lyft rider donations. Uber, for its part, hired its first-ever chief diversity officer, Bo Young Lee, earlier this year under chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi’s lead. In its first diversity report since both Khosrowshahi and Lee were hired, Uber showed slight progress, though the company still has no black and brown people in tech leadership roles. At TechCrunch Disrupt SF in September, TechCrunch’s Megan Rose Dickey spoke to both Khosrowshahi and Lee. Khosrowshahi, in a wide-ranging discussion, said Uber is “really trying to shift the culture of the company going forward.” Lee, for her part, told Dickey she’s working tirelessly to integrate Uber’s new cultural norms. Both Uber and Lyft — in fact, most of the highly valued unicorn companies in Silicon Valley and the Fortune 500 powerhouses — have a long way to go before establishing equitable cultures and hiring practices. “This challenge expands across the entire industry, in part because we’ve normalized the problem,” Thomas said. “We have a pretty dire status quo.” Let's block ads! Biden aide accuses Grassley of twisting ex-VP’s words on FBI reviews of SCOTUS nominees

A spokesperson for former Vice President Joe Biden on Thursday accused Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley of mischaracterizing Biden’s past remarks on FBI background investigations into Supreme Court nominees “to create a smoke screen.” “There is clearly an effort on the part of the White House and Senate Republicans to take out of context then-Senator Biden’s statements about the role of the FBI in the judicial nomination process to create a smoke screen for their unprecedented refusal to have the FBI conduct an investigation into credible charges,” the spokesperson said. Grassley (R-Iowa) invoked Biden’s name during his opening statement in Thursday morning’s hearing with Christine Blasey Ford, the California professor who has accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her at a small gathering more than three decades ago. Democrats have called for an FBI background investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct against Kavanaugh, who has denied all the accusations. “Contrary to what the public has been led to believe, the FBI doesn’t perform any credibility assessments or verify the truth of any events in these background investigations,” Grassley said. He went on to quote Biden, who chaired the judiciary panel during Clarence Thomas’ 1991 confirmation hearings for the high court. In Grassley’s recollection, Biden said: “The next person who refers to an FBI report as being worth anything obviously doesn’t understand anything. The FBI explicitly does not, in this or any other case, reach a conclusion, period. They say he said, she said, they said, period. So when people wave an FBI report before you, understand they do not — they do not — they do not reach conclusions. They do not make recommendations.” The Biden spokesperson, however, explained that the comments were a response to Utah Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch’s “attempts to frame the FBI’s 1991 report on Clarence Thomas as exculpatory.” “His point was that the FBI plays an investigative role in the nomination process,” the spokesperson said. “They do not make recommendations. That is the sole responsibility of the Senate — to advise and consent. Vice President Biden believes that the FBI should have investigated in this case in advance of Dr. Blasey Ford’s courageous testimony today, just as they did in 1991.” Democrats on the Judiciary Committee throughout Thursday’s hearing continued to stress their desire that the FBI conduct an investigation into the allegations, prompting Grassley to quote Biden again. “If Senate Democrats hope for the FBI to draw any conclusions on this matter, I’m going to remind you what Joe Biden said,” he said during Kavanaugh’s testimony Thursday afternoon. “Now I said this in my statement, but maybe people aren’t listening when I say it. Maybe they won’t even hear this.” Grassley recited the quote again. “The FBI provided us with the allegations,” he added. “Now it’s up to the Senate to assess their credibility.” source: https://ift.tt/2zAYZax #Headlines by: nmccaskill@politico.com (Nolan D. Three GOP governors call for delaying Kavanaugh vote

Three Republican governors called for the Senate to delay or forgo a vote on the nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court ahead of a hearing Thursday on Capitol Hill to examine sexual assault allegations against the nominee. Larry Hogan of Maryland, Charlie Baker of Massachusetts and John Kasich of Ohio are part of a small faction of Republicans who are calling for independent probes to investigate the three public allegations that have come to light since Kavanaugh's July 9 nomination, even as the majority of their colleagues in the Senate have argued for pushing through the process. "The accusations brought against Judge Kavanaugh are sickening and deserve an independent investigation," Baker said in a tweet as the hearing began. "There should be no vote in the Senate." Kavanaugh has denied all allegations of misconduct. Kasich said Wednesday an independent probe was "in the best interest of our country and the integrity of the court." Christine Blasey Ford, who says Kavanaugh held her down and groped her while at a party in the 1980s, is fielding questions from the Senate Judiciary Committee after she sent confidential letters to her representatives in Congress and her story became public. Since she came forward, two other named accusers, Deborah Ramirez and Julie Swetnick, have separately brought allegations of sexual assault against Kavanaugh from his time at Georgetown Preparatory School and at Yale University. "There are credible charges and big concerns. They need to be heard," Hogan said on Tuesday. "They ought to take whatever time it takes to make sure these accusers are heard and he has a chance to respond to them.” source: https://ift.tt/2DyWqKr #Headlines by: Jesus Rodriguez Original Post: https://ift.tt/2DyWqKr https://ift.tt/2xIKNv7

Uber changes its disaster response playbook

Uber is taking a page out of the federal government’s disaster response handbook. The ride-hailing company is centralizing how it responds to disasters, whether it’s flooding in North Carolina, a mass shooting in Las Vegas or an earthquake in Mexico City. Now, instead of taking a local-first (and sometimes reactionary) approach, the company’s global security center will monitor and coordinate responses 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The company, which announced the change in a blog post this week, has become part of the urban landscape. People use the Uber app to commute to work, attend concerts and other events, rent bikes (and eventually scooters) and even have food delivered. People have become increasingly reliant on the service, a responsibility that requires more than an app that connects drivers and riders. The GSC, as Uber calls it, monitors and flags issues that may affect its business and the communities in which it operates. From here, the GSC staff, which includes former military and security experts who speak a dozen different languages, coordinate with local Uber staff and city, county or state officials. The GSC is the entity that will make decisions on when to suspend service in an area or whether to cap surge pricing. The GSC might also lend support to local authorities, depending on their needs. This procedural change is another illustration of CEO Dara Khosrowshahi’s efforts to rehabilitate the company and its reputation. It also telegraphs the company’s push to work more closely with cities. In April, Khosrowshahi announced a series of new products to its app, including a deal with instant car-booking service Getaround to launch a product called UberRENT and a partnership with Masabi that lets users pay and book tickets for public transit in the Uber app. Uber also launched Movement in 2017, a tool that provides cities with traffic data.
