Trump blames companies impacted by his trade war

President Donald Trump on Friday appeared to accuse companies of falsely claiming that they’ve been hurt by his escalating trade war with China, instead saying they’re mismanaging their businesses. “If the Fed would cut, we would have one of the biggest Stock Market increases in a long time. The 10 percent tariff on approximately $112 billion of Chinese goods would likely raise prices for consumer items like electronics and shoes. In one example of corporate America complaining about Trump’s trade war, the Footwear Distributors and Retailers of America wrote a letter to the president this week stating that the planned tariffs would drive up costs for consumers. “Imposing tariffs in September on the majority of all footwear products from China — including nearly every type of leather shoe — will make it impossible for hardworking American individuals and families to escape the harm that comes from these tax increases,” the group wrote. “This uncertainty the China trade war has brought to our industry is stifling U.S. growth and halting capital investment in jobs, infrastructure, technologies, and more competitive pricing for our customers.” In an interview with CNN’s Richard Quest, White House trade adviser Peter Navarro vigorously defended his boss’s use of tariffs. “Absent the tariffs that have been put in place on China, China would never have come to the bargaining table and advanced this far in those negotiations,” Navarro said. “President Trump is using the tariff strategy brilliantly.” Trump defended his strategy after Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) said “there’s no question” the trade war is contributing to a slowdown of the economy. “So what does Pat Toomey want me to do? The bicephalic hatchling was discovered by a team from the Sea Turtle Patrol Hilton Head Island Tuesday while conducting nest inventory. It was found alive and released into the ocean shortly after. “We thought we had seen it all during this very busy season on Sea Turtle Patrol,” the group said on Facebook. “The mutation is more common in reptiles than in other animals, but it is still very rare,” Sea Turtle Patrol staff posted. “As with other live hatchlings found during a nest inventory, this hatchling was released to the ocean.” They named the two-headed turtle Squirt and Crush, a nod to the Disney movie Finding Nemo. Staff who discovered the turtle told PEN News that the sea turtle’s right head appeared to govern one flipper, while the left head governed the other. “There’s a bump that goes down the centre of turtle’s shells and there are two of them here, so they probably each have their own spine,” Amber Kuehn, manager of Sea Turtle Patrol Hilton Head Island, told the news outlet. With two flippers, however, the turtle couldn’t swim well. Kuehn said the odds of it surviving didn’t look good. “In general, even for the healthy ones, it’s one in a hundred,” she said. YouTube Kids launches on the web

Kid-friendly YouTube content now has its own website, youtubekids.com. The website will offer a similar experience to the existing YouTube Kids mobile app, where parents will be able to direct their child to videos that are age-appropriate, as well as track their child’s watch history and flag content missed by YouTube’s filters. At launch, the site won’t offer a sign-in option, but that will roll out at a later date, the company says. The website’s imminent launch was quietly disclosed earlier this week by YouTube, and comes ahead of the official announcement of an FTC settlement which is said to include a multi-million dollar penalty against the Google-owned video platform for its violations of U.S. children’s privacy laws, COPPA. The FTC ruling, when announced, will not be without precedent. The regulator earlier this year hit Musical.ly (now TikTok) with a record $5.7 million fine and forced it to implement an age-gate on its app. The FTC’s YouTube ruling will likely also require the same sort of age-gate, designed to redirect children under the age of 13 to a kid-safe, COPPA-compliant website where children’s personal information isn’t collected without parental consent. The website launch is only one of several changes YouTube has made in recent days, ahead of the FTC announcement. The company also this week introduced new age groupings on YouTube Kids to now include a “Preschool” filter for those age 4 and under, in addition to a “Younger” group for ages 5 to 7, and an “Older” group for kids over 7. YouTube Kids (“Older” age group) And last week, the company expanded its child safety policies to remove — instead of only restrict, as it did before — any misleading family content, including videos that target younger minors and their families, those that contain sexual themes, violence, obscene, or other mature themes not suitable for younger audiences. YouTube had come under fire in 2017 for hosting a number of bizarre and disturbing videos that were using keywords and the YouTube algorithm to target children. For example, videos of popular kids’ cartoon characters like Peppa Pig drinking bleach or getting her teeth violently yanked were showing up when children sought out Peppa Pig videos. These sorts of issues had been going on for years, in fact, but YouTube only addressed the situation by age-restricting the videos, after receiving high-profile press coverage. It also cut off monetization to some videos. The bigger problem with YouTube, as consumer advocacy groups have argued, isn’t just that YouTube can be inappropriate for kids — it’s breaking the law. YouTube Kids (“preschool” age group) Organizations like the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood (CCFC) and the Center for Digital Democracy (CDD) had asked the FTC to investigate YouTube, claiming that the company has been collecting personal information from nearly 25 million U.S. children for years, and then using this data to engage in “very sophisticated marketing techniques.” The groups said YouTube hides behinds its terms of service which say its site is only meant for those 13 and up, while doing nothing from preventing younger users from gaining entry. (And clearly, younger users are on YouTube — after all, that’s why YouTube was able to spin out a subset of its content into its own YouTube Kids app in the first place.) With the YouTube Kids website in place, now it’s only a matter of waiting for the FTC’s official ruling. The Washington Post says the details have been finalized. And according to Bloomberg, YouTube will end targeted ads on videos aimed at kids. Based on YouTube’s existing YouTube Kids Privacy Policy, that has yet come to pass with the launch of this new website. Uber, Lyft pitch landmark California worker proposal — and tech industry’s first ballot threat

Uber and Lyft proposed a deal Thursday that would give their drivers better wages and bargaining rights, and the companies are prepared to pour millions of dollars into launching the tech industry’s first ballot battle in California in order to get their way. Tech companies publicly backed a framework with wage and benefit guarantees months ago, but the new proposal gets more concrete, offering an explicit $21-per-hour wage floor guarantee while incorporating a fleshed-out bargaining agreement aimed at satisfying labor by setting up a tailored avenue for tech industry workers to organize. Even more crucial to the deal’s prospects in labor-friendly Sacramento, the proposal would also set up a collective bargaining mechanism — unique to California — that would apply broadly to the tech sector, rather than be negotiated company by company, and would be overseen by a new state entity. But with only about two weeks remaining in California’s legislative session, the announcement launches a down-to-the-wire political scramble that will no doubt fire up significant pushback from labor-aligned legislators. If lawmakers do not fall in line and send Newsom the deal, Uber and Lyft are prepared to go directly to the voters: Each company has committed $30 million to qualifying a ballot initiative. If the issue does end up on the 2020 ballot, it would represent the first time California’s cash-flush and increasingly politically engaged tech industry takes an issue to voters. For more than a year, the ride-for-hire firms and other Silicon Valley giants have been lobbying Sacramento to soften the impact of a 2018 California Supreme Court ruling that could broadly reclassify workers from independent contractors to employees. That prospect is especially threatening to gig economy firms like Uber and Lyft that rely almost entirely on a large army of on-demand contractors as their workforce. Where the tech industry has seen an existential threat to their business models, organized labor has seen an opportunity to win precedent-setting rights for gig economy workers. Both have been negotiating a potential deal under the auspices of Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office — and the framework released by Uber and Lyft Thursday represents the most concrete negotiating position yet. The proposal does not explicitly address the worker classification issue, but it would give the firms immunity from costly class action lawsuits stemming from allegations of misclassification. California’s flagship labor umbrella group, the California Labor Federation, immediately came out in opposition to the proposal. Spokesperson Steve Smith told POLITICO that the proposed deal would “strip drivers of basic rights they’re already entitled to under the law” by skirting the worker classification issue, and he vowed that labor would fight both a potential bill and a possible ballot initiative. The labor federation is sponsoring the bill that would enshrine the California Supreme Court ruling in state law. “It’s more of the same hollow promises from companies that are just trying to get out of their obligations under the law to provide basic protections for their workers, and we will vigorously oppose this measure with a unified labor movement,” Smith said. Whatever happens in California could set a national precedent at a time when similar worker classification proposals are before Congress — issues on which the tech industry has asked Washington to defer to Sacramento — and as Democratic presidential candidates have increasingly embraced offering more employment rights to gig workers. Those terms largely mirror a statement released Wednesday by Newsom’s chief of staff, Ann O’Leary, seeking to rebut a powerful construction union group that assailed the governor’s office for its willingness to make a deal. The public conflict illuminated fault lines within organized labor as the Service Employees International Union, which has been immersed in talks, broke with the construction unions by signaling that they would be receptive to the kind of compromise with tech companies that Newsom’s office was seeking. In her statement, O’Leary said the administration has always “sought real unions with real collective bargaining rights” but did not explicitly mention the thorny employee classification issue. Man Paddles 2,900 Miles Alone From California to Hawaii to Raise Awareness About Ocean Pollution

(Photo Credit: Antonio de la Rosa / Facebook) A man recently paddled more than 2,900 miles from California to Hawaii to raise awareness about ocean pollution and encourage people to recycle. Antonio de la Rosa completed the 2,951-mile solo trip from San Francisco to Honolulu in 76 days on a stand-up paddleboard, which was equipped with a water desalinator, food, a sleeping area, and solar panels to help power his communications equipment and GPS, Newsweek reported. De la Rosa, who runs a Spain-based adventure tourism company, said the paddleboat weighed over 1,500 pounds and didn’t come with a motor, so he had to use his arms and legs during the trip. His journey, which was documented over Facebook Live, required him to paddle for eight to ten hours a day. De la Rosa said the hardest part of the trip was traveling through coastal waters. “The current and winds are hard and it’s so difficult to get out of the coast,” De la Rosa told KHON-TV. “I had 10 days with problems very close the coast.” Along the way, De la Rosa noticed a lot of garbage next to his paddleboard, including plastic fishing nets, which may have been part of the Great Pacific garbage patch, a large area of the ocean where fishing gear, litter, microplastics, and marine debris form a “whirlpool” from ocean pollution, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). De la Rosa took the trip to educate others on the consequences of ocean pollution. His paddleboard reads “SAVE the OCEAN. No plastics, NO nets, RECYCLE.” He hopes that his solo journey will inspire others to pursue more sustainable practices and work together to curb ocean pollution, which negatively impacts marine life, the San Fransisco Chronicle noted. De la Rosa, who claims he’s the first person to stand-up paddle board across the Pacific Ocean, has previously participated in extreme ocean trips, including crossing the Atlantic by himself in a rowboat in 2014 and paddling through the Arctic Circle three years ago. Republicans grow anxious about the Trump economy

Republicans have sat patiently with President Donald Trump on his tariff roller-coaster ride with China. Now they’re starting to feel queasy. Trump argues his escalating trade war will force China to the table for a deal. But his ever-rising tariffs — and his market-rattling tweets — are increasingly alarming the GOP. “There’s no question that trade uncertainty is contributing to the slowdown,” said Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.), a leading free-trader. “We’re in a very good place. The danger is: Where are we going to be a year from now if concerns about trade continue to be an irritant to growth?” Particularly as the global economy cools, key Republicans say new levies on almost all Chinese goods threaten to step on the president’s good news story: A growing economy, rising wages and low unemployment. And that could have outsize effects on Republicans’ tough task of defending the Senate and the White House in 2020. “The biggest risk to the economy is the whole trade situation,” added Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) in an interview. “I think the president did a great job, we stopped doing the regulatory burden, we have a fairer tax system … and the whole trade war has injected a huge dose of uncertainty and instability.” Most Republicans have resisted Trump’s protectionist tendencies for ideological reasons as well as for the hit to the economy and their own political fortunes. But they’ve made an exception on China given its economic rivalry with the United States. Now his tariff regime on Chinese, European and North American imports have reduced economic growth and increased household costs, according to the Congressional Budget Office. Amid some talk by Trump of new tax cuts to juice the economy, his own political party is cool to the idea. Instead GOP senators are urging the president to conclude new trade deals with Japan and the United Kingdom and intensify the effort to push the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement through Congress. Republicans like Toomey are also advising the White House to embrace modest renewals of expiring tax provisions to counteract a slowdown in business investment. And, however delicately, they are urging Trump to show more flexibility on China. “The administration has to be prepared to take off the tariffs in order to get a good agreement,” said Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio), a former U.S. trade representative. “And there’s been some disagreement about that within the administration. Some are saying they should come off and others are saying we should keep them. I don’t think you’ll get a good agreement if you do that.” Trump has largely staked his reelection on his economic prowess, so any slowdown could narrow his path back to the White House and undercut the GOP effort to hold the Senate majority. “An economy slowing could be a political threat. If you slow down to 1 percent going into the 2020 election, that’s the same thing as a recession politically,” said Douglas Holtz-Eakin, president of the center-right American Action Forum and a former CBO director. “You grow at 1.8 percent? You’re back to Obama territory. You can’t survive that.” For Republicans up for reelection, “at what point is it better for you separate yourself from the president as opposed to riding his coattails?” Holtz Eakin added. White House spokesman Judd Deere said the president is merely trying to “level the playing field for American workers” and played down fears of a slump, citing the current expansion. “It’s clear that the president’s polices of fair and reciprocal trade along with lower taxes and deregulation are working,” Deere said. Any Trump-fueled economic drag will quickly fall on the at-risk GOP senators who hold the keys to the Senate majority. Susan Collins’ Maine has seen lobster sales to China plunging; farmers in Joni Ernst’s Iowa have had a brutal year. “Everyone acknowledges that the economy is good, but they are still uneasy about their own circumstances,” said one Republican official working on Senate races. “I am nervous that people will lose their patience and want to start seeing results.” The GOP is eager to give markets some semblance of certainty, and Republicans are openly brainstorming ways to stabilize the economy. Some are urging the White House to index capital gains to inflation; others are advising a singular focus on passing the USMCA. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has thus far resisted voting on the new North American trade deal despite support for the pact among some swing-district Democrats. It might not come to the floor at all while Trump is president given Pelosi’s demands to strengthen labor and environmental standards in the agreement. “It would be great to get USMCA done this year. But it would not at all surprise me if it happens in the next administration,” said Rep. Don Beyer (D-Va.). Pelosi previously stalled trade deals under President George W. Bush, but Republicans argue a repeat of those tactics would more difficult with her majority staked in large part on pro-trade Democrats. “That’s an untenable position for them to continue to block it,” Portman said. “USMCA is practical. At some point, you’ve got to allow people to have a vote.” Congress has taken some steps to keep the economy humming, raising the debt ceiling and passing a two-year budget deal that will likely help avoid a government shutdown at the end of September. Some Senate Republicans are also eager to pass a long-term transportation bill and members of both parties want to vote on legislation aimed at reducing health care costs. No firm decisions about the fall agenda have been made by GOP leaders. Collins said she’s personally asked Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) to make a bipartisan health care package a priority and turn the Senate’s focus toward legislation, rather than nominees. Others are diving into the geopolitics of Trump’s conflict with China. Portman is urging White House officials to develop an international coalition to isolate China, while Sen. Steve Daines (R-Mont.) is traveling to China next week to discuss trade with the country’s leaders. Trump has toggled between calling Chinese President Xi Jinping the “enemy” to showing “great respect” for him. He’s ordered U.S. companies to move out of China before backtracking and saying a few days later that he’s likely to “have a deal” with Beijing. And some Republicans say the fight with China is worth the short-term pain. “Do I like tariffs as a matter of policy on any given day? No. What other alternatives do you have to rebalance what has now been 30 years of cheating, lying, stealing and unfairness on behalf of the Chinese?” said Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.). For months, Republicans have agreed that Trump is right to take on China even as they opposed his tariffs on allies. But their patience isn’t endless. Some blame White House trade adviser Peter Navarro, who’s pushed a hard-line approach toward China and asserted the economy will remain strong. “I don’t think Peter Navarro understands the instability of what he promotes. [And what] his trade war, is injecting into the economy,” Johnson said. The worry among free-traders is that China’s one-party system can wait out Trump and avoid political consequences. That’s something that the White House and Republicans simply can’t do with an election 14 months away. “I give the president credit for confronting China on the very bad behavior they’ve engaged in. I’m not sure these are the best tactics,” Toomey said. “The Chinese have the capacity to hold out for a very long time.” Heather Caygle contributed to this report. A step too far for the Appalachian Trail

Dominion Energy wants to run a massive pipeline across America’s treasured Appalachian National Scenic Trail and some of the least developed wildlands remaining in the East. This isn’t just a bad idea, it’s an unprecedented one. Dominion, the Virginia-based power giant that serves customers in 18 states, wants to do something that has never been done in the half century since the iconic hiking path was enshrined in law: force a pipeline across the Appalachian Trail on federal land managed by the Forest Service. To get its way, the company must persuade lawmakers to overturn a federal court decision and change a law that has protected important parts of the trail for almost 50 years. Congress should say no. The conservation of the American landscape is a deeply patriotic tradition to which I have dedicated my life. I grew up in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia where my experiences along the Appalachian Trail and in the Blue Ridge Mountains fostered my love of the outdoors and my career in conservation. I climbed every mountain within sight of my home and fished every river. From 2009 to 2017, I served as director of the National Park Service, capping 40 years at the agency working to ensure—as Congress required when it passed the National Park Service Organic Act in 1916—that our national parks remain “unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations.” The Appalachian Trail has been one of the jewels of our national park system since its creation in 1968. Every year, it draws millions of visitors, offering the opportunity to explore scenery and solitude from Georgia to Maine. Lands adjacent to the trail also provide important habitat for wildlife and plants. Like the creation of the trail itself, conservation has traditionally transcended politics. As a nation, we have decided to set aside some areas as national parks or designated wilderness and establish an American vision of conservation that resonates around the world. The writer and historian Wallace Stegner called our national parks “absolutely American” and “the best idea we ever had.” But that bipartisan idea is now under threat from an administration working aggressively to undo legal protections for our public lands. One of those threats is Dominion’s irresponsible route for the Atlantic Coast Pipeline, a pipeline that would carve its way across the Appalachian Trail, the Blue Ridge Parkway and two national forests. To be sure, many roads, powerlines and even pipelines already cross the trail along its 2,190-mile route, which winds its way across private, state and federal land. But as I and other trail hikers know, the national parks and forests where the trail runs are special. Their mountain vistas offer some of the most scenic and undeveloped wildland hiking in the East. Dominion’s pipeline would permanently affect the trail experience on these protected federal lands, carving up a largely forested mountain landscape with a cleared right-of-way the width of a multi-lane highway. To achieve its goal, Dominion has courted Trump appointees eager to promote the administration’s energy-at-any-cost agenda. Two years ago, it looked like Dominion might get its way. In January 2018, the Forest Service gave the company a permit to cross the Appalachian Trail on national forest land, but a coalition of conservation groups quickly challenged the decision in federal court. Eleven months later, the court concluded that, under federal law, the Forest Service did not have legal authority to allow the crossing and invalidated the permit. Dominion wants to overturn this court decision in Congress. The court relied on a federal law known as the Mineral Leasing Act, which since 1973 has prohibited oil and gas pipelines from crossing all units of the national park system, including Appalachian Trail segments on federal land. Almost five decades ago, Congress understood that pipelines presented extraordinary risks—including the effects of heavy construction, spills and explosions—that have no place alongside the natural beauty that our park system protects. Dominion wants lawmakers to upend that protection, changing the law to allow the Atlantic Coast Pipeline to cross the trail on national forest land. Congress should not roll back this longstanding protection for the Appalachian Trail on federal lands. Dominion has other options to cross the trail, and it must work with property owners, local communities and state and federal agencies to find an alternative route that will protect the trail’s integrity. America’s national park system is truly magnificent, a testament to our best instincts and aspirations as a nation, and it deserves the full protection that Congress has afforded it. The 2,528 coins were unearthed by meal detectorists Lisa Grace and Adam Staples at a farm field in Chew Valley in Somerset, England, BBC News reported. The coin hoard, which features King Harold II pennies from the end of Anglo-Saxon England and William the Conqueror coins after the 1066 Norman conquest, could be worth around $6 million. According to the British Museum, the discovery was the second largest find of Norman coins ever in the UK. The hoard contains 1,236 coins of Harold II, the last crowned Anglo-Saxon king of England, and 1,310 coins of William I. (Photo Credit: Peter Summers / Getty Images) “It was totally unbelievable — to find one would be an exceptional day metal detecting,” Staples told the BBC. “To find two unrelated coins would be almost impossible.” The couple said a friend first came across a single William the Conqueror silver coin. “And when there were more beeps, from two to 10, from 50 to 100, to wow how many are there?” said Staples. “From then on it was just crazy.” Staples said it took four or five hours to dig up all 2,528 coins. Experts at the museum have spent the last seven months assessing and cataloguing the hoard, which contains 1,236 coins of Harold II, the last crowned Anglo-Saxon king of England, and 1,310 coins of William I, as well as several coin fragments. Experts at the Museum called the hoard “massively important.” One possible reason? It has revealed a millennium-old tax scam. Gareth Williams, the museum’s curator of early medieval coinage, told the Guardian three of the coins have been identified as “mules,” a combination of two types of coin – essentially an early form of tax-dodging. The person that made the coins used designs and language that relate to both Harold and William, making it easy to pass them off as legal tender as the average Anglo-Saxon was illiterate and the images of the kings looked similar, as per the Guardian. Stephen Clews, from the Roman Baths in Bath, England — which hopes to acquire the coins — told the BBC the total hoard value would have been enough to buy a flock of 500 sheep in 1067-68. While the coins have not been officially valued, they could be worth about £5 million (around $6 million) now. Staples said the amount they get would be shared among the whole group that went on the treasure-hunting trip and the landowner. How Jim Henson Risked It All to Make ‘The Dark Crystal’

(Photo Credit: The Jim Henson Company) August 30th sees the Netflix premiere of The Dark Crystal: Age Of Resistance, Louis Leterrier’s prequel to Jim Henson’s 1982 cult classic film. Henson was on top of the world at the time — The Muppet Show had just gone off the air after five increasingly successful seasons, and two movies, The Muppet Movie and The Great Muppet Caper, were critical and commercial successes. His next project, though, would take a very different and deeply strange approach towards storytelling. The Dark Crystal was a wild, dark fantasia unlike anything moviegoers had seen from Henson. Taking place on the world of Thra, it followed an elf-like creature called Jen, a Gelfling tasked with returning a shard to a shattered crystal before the planet’s three suns align. Every inch of the film is lush, weird, and wildly uncommercial, and it struggled at the box office against the juggernaut of E.T. In hindsight, it remains one of Henson’s most unique and personal works, and rewards deeper examination. Despite the puppet master’s incredible commercial success, the flick barely got made at all. Let’s dive deep into the production of The Dark Crystal and where its ideas came from. The Shrouded Past Henson’s first steps towards The Dark Crystal came in the mid 1970s. While the majority of his work to that date had been for children on Sesame Street, the puppeteer had long wanted to create content for adult audiences as well. Talent agent Bernie Brillstein introduced Henson to another one of his clients, TV producer Lorne Michaels. Michaels was putting together the initial cast for what would become Saturday Night Live, and the two started bouncing ideas back and forth for how Henson could be involved with the show. Working with longtime collaborator Frank Oz, Henson developed “The Land of Gorch,” a weekly segment for the show’s 1975 season that chronicled the misadventures of a grotesque family of birdlike creatures living in a swampy crater. Unlike his more innocent work, these monsters were vile, selfish, rude and very adult. There were several strikes against it from the start, though — union rules meant that only SNL‘s writers could pen scripts and stories for the puppets, not Henson and his crew. None of the show’s staff enjoyed the assignment, and it only lasted a single season. The experience was useful for Henson and his team, however, introducing them to the unique pressures of filming a network TV program each week. He’d use it to fuel The Muppet Show, which premiered the next year on British network ATV before returning to American airwaves in first-run syndication. That show would be a runaway success, and by 1978 it was the most popular program in the world, airing in 108 countries and drawing 235 million viewers a week. A few years later, Henson and his daughter Cheryl were flying to London from New York City when a snowstorm hit and the pair were trapped at JFK Airport. Jim took the time to write out the basic plot of a fantasy story he was calling “The Crystal” in his Red Book, the hardbound journal that he took everywhere with him. By the time he reached England, he had a complete outline of the film and its world. But it would be a little while before he had the clout to make it a reality, as well as input from a fantasy artist previously best known for working with some guy called William Shakespeare. A Magic Pen Brian Froud was a British fantasy artist with a rich, ethereal style that seemed unmoored from any restrictions. Early in his career, he worked on illustrated editions of plays like A Midsummer Night’s Dream as he found his footing. In 1977, he released The Land of Froud, and the next year would see his first mainstream success with Fairies, a collection of lush paintings accompanying British folktales retold by writer Alan Lee. Henson saw a Brian Froud painting on the cover of a book and immediately recognized a kindred spirit. In 1977, Henson brough Froud out to the Muppet workshop in Elstree to show him how the magic was made. Froud enjoyed the experience, but was drawn to an unexpected item in the archives: the Land of Gorch puppets, with all of their crusty, oddball protuberances and unsettling designs. The pair started working together on “The Crystal” in 1978, batting ideas back and forth in a series of Manhattan meetings. Jim was heavily inspired by Seth Speaks, a collection of messages allegedly transmitted by an “energy personality” named Seth to Dorothy Roberts. The Seth Material was hugely popular in the decade and Henson gave copies to many of his collaborators. Over time, the basic structure and cast of The Dark Crystal came together, with input from Frank Oz and other long-time collaborators. It would tell the tale of a fallen world heading for collapse unless one unlikely hero could restore equilibrium to two warring, inhuman races. A bold, ambitious dark fantasy, it was wildly different from anything the Muppet man had ever accomplished. He started pitching it as something that had never been done before: the first live-action feature film without a single human being on screen. Froud’s compelling designs for Thra’s warring races and strange animals were potent, but Paramount balked at the proposed $15 million price tag — this was at a time where Disney animated films cost around $1 million to produce. The Shard Henson finally got funding from British TV production company ITC to make the film. He’d worked with them before on The Muppet Show, and also after the first Muppet movie was a success he was able to bundle the sequel with The Dark Crystal. Unfortunately, two major theatrical missteps in 1980 put the company on the back foot, as Village People disco showcase Can’t Stop The Music and pricey adventure Raise The Titanic! both bombed at the box office. After The Dark Crystal wrapped filming, the company was sold, merged and eventually put under the leadership of Australian entrepreneur Robert Holmes à Court. Early test screenings in Washington D.C. and Detroit, Michigan didn’t help matters. Audiences who went in expecting the classic cuddly Muppets they knew and loved were unsettled and repulsed by Henson and Froud’s alien worlds. Many walked out before the film was over, and it wasn’t long before The Dark Crystal seemed radioactive to Hollywood distributors. That didn’t dissuade Henson, who took the film back to the editing bay. He made some major changes to the product, including redubbing the Skeksis’ alien language into English and adding more exposition and explanation. That didn’t impress à Court, who deemed it too weird to promote heavily. And that’s where Henson’s maverick nature got the better of him. Convinced that The Dark Crystal had more potential than anybody saw, he combined his assets to come up with enough cash to buy the film back from ITC and release it himself. It cost him $15 million, but ITC had put in $25 million, so in some ways you could consider that a good deal. He then contracted with Universal Studios to open the film on December 17th. It was by no means a sure thing, and at the time Henson’s son John was terrified that it would mean financial ruin for the entire family. Thankfully, even though it wasn’t a blockbuster success on the level of the previous two Muppet movies, The Dark Crystal would gross $40 million by the end of its nine week theatrical run, allowing Henson to earn back his investment and stay afloat. He would use some of the profits to purchase the rights to the Muppets from ITC as well. A New World The Dark Crystal had always been a passion project for Henson, and it came at a particularly active time in his life. His studio was producing Fraggle Rock for HBO, preparing the animated Muppet Babies series for saturday morning television, and consulting on a number of other projects for films and commercials. Earning his money back gave him the creative freedom to follow more adult impulses for a while. Froud and Henson would collaborate again on 1986’s Labyrinth, a more conventional fantasy starring David Bowie as the wicked Goblin King. This film would feature a screenplay by Monty Python’s Terry Jones, along with contributions from George Lucas, Laura Phillips, Elaine May and Henson itself. With a $25 million budget, comparable to The Dark Crystal, and a major rock star anchoring the cast, people expected it to be an even bigger hit. Unfortunately, middling reviews and competition from box office smashes like Top Gun led it to earn under $13 million theatrically. Three years later, Henson would sell his company to Disney, freeing him to pursue creative pursuits without struggling over financing. Unfortunately, he suddenly passed away in 1990. He left behind a number of unfinished projects, including a prospective Dark Crystal sequel he was developing with writer David Odell. Brilliant animation director Genndy Tartakovsky was attached to the project in 2009, but after a number of false starts and delays, it was shelved and eventually released as a comic book series. The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance returns us to Thra for a prequel series that Leterrier has been working on getting made since 2012. The show, which follows a trio of Gelflings as they foment revolt against the Skeksis, was produced entirely with puppetry like the original film, only using CGI to digitally erase traces of the human puppeteers. Brian Froud returned to design new characters alongside his son Toby, and the voice cast includes a ton of names, including Eddie Izzard, Lena Headey, Simon Pegg and Mark Hamill. Everything we’ve read indicates that Leterrier and his team are doing the series out of one thing: love for the original, in all its weird, risky, uncommercial glory. It premieres on Netflix on August 30.
