Canon Officially Discontinues Its Last Film Camera

While some traditionalists still shoot film, the entire industry has been steadily shifting away from film since the early 2000s. If anything, the life cycle of Canon’s last film camera the EOS-1v paints an interesting picture of the decline of film. The camera was launched in 2000 and production of unit continued until 2010 when Canon announced they would no longer be producing any new film camera bodies but would continue to sell existing stock. Here’s where it gets interesting from a cultural and technological trend standpoint. Canon just announced that the line is officially discontinued. That means it took eight years to sell through the last of their stock. Clearly film cameras aren’t flying off the shelves these days. People who aren’t quite ready to abandon film, however, live in a sort of wonderland of shopping opportunities. As the entire world has shifted away from film there’s piles of deals to be had snapping up old and high quality gear whose owners have moved on to digital pastures.
