Former US Green Party candidate for president Jill Stein has accused CNN of trying to “blame and shame” independent voters by editing an interview to make it seem that she was responsible for Hillary Clinton’s loss in 2016. Moving to a different city or country can be lonely. Here are some things that helped me cope.

The decision to move from Copenhagen to London was an easy one. I was 26, recently unemployed, and single. So when I was offered a job in a cosmopolitan city with a population twice that of my home country, I said yes without much hesitation. I didn’t know anyone there, but shaking things up was exactly what I needed, so I rented out my apartment and left. I was excited. We’re told that making big changes in life is invigorating. That exposing yourself to new things and new people is the only way to really get to know yourself. That to grow as a person, you must challenge yourself. I find this to be mostly true, but I’ve also discovered that actually uprooting yourself, thrilling as it may be, comes with its own set of challenges. Challenges that have taken time to develop coping strategies for. Trump administration targets rebates blamed for inflating drug prices

The Trump administration on Thursday proposed an ambitious overhaul of the drug purchasing system in its latest bid to lower the cost of medicines. The Department of Health and Human Services proposed eliminating a legal exemption and making the rebates drugmakers give insurance plans and middlemen in the drug supply chain subject to fines under the federal anti-kickback statute. It plans to create a new legal exemption for prescription drug discounts that are offered directly to patients. The rule would fulfill part of President Donald Trump’s drug pricing blueprint. Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar first hinted to Congress last year he was looking at forbidding all drug company payments to pharmacy benefit managers — middlemen who negotiate drug prices — by leveraging anti-kickback laws. Critics said the current “safe harbor” protection that empowers the rebate system creates an incentive for those middlemen and insurers to demand big rebates and then keep them as profits. Under the current system, rebates are not typically passed through to patients, but insurers say they use the extra cash to keep premiums low. HHS predicted that the change would lower Medicare beneficiaries’ out-of-pocket costs but increase premiums anywhere from 8 to 22 percent for most enrollees. Asked about rising premiums, a senior HHS official said the question seemed to be a “knee-jerk reaction” to protect the status quo, and that it could come out to a $3 to $5 increase per month. The administration said that the rule would apply to federal health programs, though private plans may copy the strategy. Congress would need to get involved to push the rule for commercial insurance. The drug lobby PhRMA applauded the proposal, saying it could especially help patients with chronic diseases such as diabetes who use insulin. But the trade group representing pharmacy benefit managers said efforts to eliminate rebates their negotiate must factor the impact it would have on Medicare beneficiaries’ access to affordable drugs and costs to taxpayers. Trump says he’ll let Justice Department make decision on Mueller report release

President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he will defer to the Department of Justice about how to handle the release of special counsel Robert Mueller’s final report but may ask the FBI to review its use-of-force policies in the wake of Roger Stone’s arrest. In an interview with The Daily Caller, the president said he had “never” spoken to acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker about the probe and that when Mueller wraps up his investigation “they’ll have to make their decision within the Justice Department” as to whether they will release the report publicly or not. Trump pointed to Whitaker’s comments earlier this week that Mueller was close to finishing his inquiry into Russian interference in the 2016 election, saying that “I think after almost two years it certainly should be” coming to a close. He also downplayed the indictments and guilty pleas of his close associates who have been wrapped up in the in the investigation, including most recently Stone, his longtime adviser, who was arrested and indicted last Friday. Stone has been charged with lying to Congress, obstructing investigators and witness tampering. He pleaded not guilty on Tuesday. “Process crimes or process, you know, questions,” Trump said of the charges against members of his inner circle. “The answer is different than what you thought it might be and some people say they lost their memory or a lack of memory, which a lot of people can understand that too.” The president reiterated his claim that “there was no collusion whatsoever” between his campaign and the Russian government, but called Stone’s pre-dawn arrest by a dozen armed FBI agents “very sad.” “But I will say, I’m speaking for a lot of people that were very disappointed to see that go down that way,” he said. “To see it happen where it was on camera, on top of it. That was a very, very disappointing scene.” A CNN camera crew happened to capture Stone’s arrest, though the cable network has insisted that they were not tipped off by the FBI or Mueller’s team, something Trump allies have alleged. The network instead insisted that it was able to capture Stone’s arrest thanks to a hunch based on unusual grand jury activity in Washington the previous day. Mueller defended the secrecy of the arrest in a court filing last week, writing that making Stone’s charges public could “increase the risk of the defendant fleeing and destroying (or tampering with) evidence.” But Trump insisted that would not have been an issue. “Many people know Roger, and Roger is not a person that they would have to worry about [from] that standpoint. And I thought it was sad to see it. Very sad,” he said. The president also said that he would “think” about asking the FBI to review its use of force guidelines, matching a request from one of his top allies on Capitol Hill, Senate Judiciary Chairman Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), who asked for a review of the tactics used for the Stone arrest. And he suggested that law enforcement officials were wasting resources on the Mueller investigation, in turn shortchanging other federal investigations like those into the 2017 Las Vegas mass shooting. “You look at it, and you say, isn’t that sad to have devoted this time, this energy” over a “hoax,” Trump said. “But that is very interesting to ask, where you’ve had so many people killed, and so badly wounded, because I went to the hospital. You had people so badly wounded. People never talk about the wounded. The level of hurt and devastation for a whole lifetime. You know, many people just devastated for a lifetime. They’ll never be the same. And you look at that by comparison to the Russian hoax, it’s a shame. The Russian witch hunt, it’s a shame.” Article originally published on POLITICO Magazine Source: https://politi.co/2HK54Yr Droolin’ Dog sniffed out this story and shared it with you. Warren expected to announce candidacy on Feb. 9

Sen. Elizabeth Warren is expected to formally announce her plans to run for president next week in an event that follows her New Year’s Eve exploratory-bid filing. In a message posted Thursday evening on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, the Massachusetts Democrat told supporters to expect a major announcement on Feb. 9. “One month ago today, we launched this presidential exploratory committee to build a grassroots movement to level the playing field for working people,” she wrote. “Since then, we’ve traveled to Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Puerto Rico, & heard from thousands of people all across the country. I’ll be making a BIG announcement about my 2020 plans on Saturday, February 9.” After the Feb. 9 event, Warren is expected to immediately ramp up her campaign travel schedule. Warren was the first major Democrat to launch an exploratory bid for president, and one of three Democratic U.S. senators so far to have joined the field. Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) last week announced her candidacy at a rally in Oakland, Calif., that that drew 20,000 people. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York has also joined what’s eventually expected to be a sprawling field of Democrats. Microsoft posts higher profits as cloud sales jump

Tech giant Microsoft reported a 12pc increase in quarterly revenues thanks to growth in its fast-growing cloud computing division. The company posted $32.5bn (£24.8bn) in revenue in the second quarter, compared to $28.9bn a year ago. Profits reached $8.4bn, after a loss in the same period of last year due to a one-off tax charge. The Seattle-based company attributed its growth largely to its cloud offering Azure and Surface PC hardware. It also saw an increase in revenue from LinkedIn, which it acquired in 2016, and its Office software products which include Word, Excel and Outlook. The company has sought to invest heavily in its cloud offering, competing with Amazon Web Services. It reported a 76pc increase in revenue from Azure alone – the biggest area of growth for the corporation. “Our strong commercial cloud results reflect our deep and growing partnerships with leading companies in every industry including retail, financial services, and healthcare,” said Satya Nadella, Microsoft’s chief executive. “We are delivering differentiated value across the cloud and edge as we work to earn customer trust every day.” Last year, Microsoft overtook Apple to become the world’s biggest company, a title it has vied with Amazon for in recent weeks. Shares fell nearly 3pc in after hours trading because the company narrowly failed to meet Wall Street profit expectations. Trump says he never asked Roger Stone about WikiLeaks

President Donald Trump on Thursday denied that he ever had communication with his longtime associate Roger Stone about WikiLeaks or ever directed anyone on his campaign to contact Stone about the anti-secrecy organization. The emphatic statement, in an interview with The New York Times, came almost a week after Stone was indicted on multiple felony charges, some of which are related to his truthfulness concerning matters about WikiLeaks. “No, I didn’t. I never did,” Trump told The Times when asked whether he’d spoken with Stone about WikiLeaks. When pressed by Times reporters on the matter, Trump also denied ever directing anyone to contact Stone about WikiLeaks. “Never did,” the president said. On Jan. 25, Stone was indicted on seven charges related to alleged lying to Congress and efforts to intimidate another witness in special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, Randy Credico, who was in contact with WikiLeaks editor Julian Assange in 2016. The indictment further says that an unnamed individual gave instructions to an unidentified senior Trump campaign official to get in touch with Stone “about any additional releases and what other damaging information” WikiLeaks was holding about Hillary Clinton’s campaign. It remains unclear who that official was. Stone has pleaded not guilty to the charges, and has said that Mueller’s indictment is “thin” and that the particular section about a senior campaign official is based on something that never happened. Also in the Time interview, Trump said that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who is expected to leave the Justice Department soon, had told Trump’s lawyers that the president is not a target of Mueller’s inquiry. Until Matthew Whitaker became acting attorney general, Rosenstein oversaw the special counsel’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. House panel set to kick off debate on presidential tax returns

A House panel next week will be the first to wade into Democrats’ efforts to ensure that President Donald Trump and his successors release their tax returns, setting the stage for possible political and legal battles to come. The House Ways and Means Oversight Subcommittee specifically called next Thursday’s hearing to discuss a legislative proposal that would require presidents, vice presidents and major party nominees for those offices to release a decade’s worth of tax returns. But the hearing is likely to also touch on the Ways and Means Committee’s efforts to acquire and release Trump’s returns through current legal channels. Trump broke with four decades of precedent in 2016 when he refused to divulge his tax returns, citing ongoing audits, after at first saying he would disclose them. Democrats vowed to seek Trump’s returns if they took over the House, and some progressives have been pressing Ways and Means Chairman Richard Neal (D-Mass.) to be more aggressive in his efforts. Neal, as chairman of a congressional tax committee, has the power to access anyone’s tax returns under a century-old law that’s rarely been invoked. But Neal has also consistently said that the committee should move methodically, because the administration is almost certain to mount a legal challenge to any attempt to acquire Trump’s returns. The legislative proposal on presidential tax returns is part of the House Democrats’ ethics bill. How the Presidency Became a Billionaire’s Ultimate Prize

There was a time the presidency was beneath a billionaire’s ambition. Oh, the son of a billionaire like William Randolph Hearst, John Kennedy or Nelson Rockefeller might draw on dad’s cash to pave a golden path to the White House. But the guys who made their fortunes in industry or finance traditionally disdained the demotion that the presidency represented. The better posterity play was to spend some money to slap your name on a museum or a new philanthropic foundation or to buy a newspaper. If the political itch persisted, the billionaire could always scratch it by buying the presidency for a friend or associate. So why then are so many billionaires running for president in the 2020 cycle or shopping for the office? Faux billionaire Donald Trump is obviously in again. (He’s been running since he was elected the first time.) Michael Bloomberg and Starbucks mogul Howard Schultz have taxied their personal jets onto the runway. Fellow plutocrat Tom Steyer was flying in formation with them until early January when he bowed out after assessing his chances, although he’s still a player, having pledged $40 million just to impeach Tump. And don’t forget the coquettish billionaires who’ve visited Iowa or otherwise teased the press with the notice of a candidacy: Mark Cuban, Oprah Winfrey, Mark Zuckerberg, Sheryl Sandberg and Bob Iger. This is a bestiary of plutocrats so plentiful it would require Audubon to collect, paint and stuff them for inspection by a political taxonomist. The first genuine billionaire to aggressively stoop to a run at the presidency, H. Ross Perot, did so twice in the 1990s as a third-party candidate, spending $115 million (in today’s dollars) in the 1992 contest. He won just 18.9 percent of the popular vote, which soured other billionaires on running until Trump launched his 2016 campaign. But Perot’s wacky campaign—he briefly dropped out in July because he believed President George H.W. Bush planned to smear his daughter and spoil her wedding!—infected the billionaire class with the idea. What is Trump but Perot played at grindcore tempo? The decline of party authority and the rise of affordable media combined to lower the barriers to entry, giving wealthy outsiders like them, with no real party loyalty, a new way in. Presidential candidacy, in effect, had become disintermediated. Compared to the professional presidential candidates who have achieved maximum political socialization by running for city councils, working in state legislatures or other governments, or serving in Congress, the billionaire candidate stands as a loner, somebody who has gotten good at balancing at the top of the hierarchy and barking orders to underlings. This, I think, is the strongest case against a billionaire chief executive (and a flaw apparent every day in Trump): He fancies himself a king whose powers know no limits. We’ve yet to see the kingly side of Schultz, but we have seen Bloomberg’s. Whenever somebody in his inner political circle told Mayor Mike he couldn’t do something he would respond with a version of: “When I started my company, people told me I could never put a computer terminal on every trader’s desk and charge tens of thousands of dollars for financial information, so don’t tell me what I can’t do.” Silence would ensue. If only somebody close to Bloomberg had told him early on, “No problem, Mike, you can be president in a heartbeat!” he would be counting his money in his Bermuda mansion instead of stalking the precincts of New Hampshire. The modern presidency appeals especially to today’s billionaires who have reached that end point at which additional wealth conveys no additional joy or increase in status. They want a larger stage from which to dispense their pet theories, underlings by the hundreds of thousands, and a whole new org chart to dominate. What else but the White House could give them all they crave? It’s a mistake, of course, as Trump has learned, because the checks and balances of the legislature and the courts prevent a billionaire president from dictating by whim. Yet the illusion persists, and the appeal of the job increases. The billionaire candidate looks at Trump and says: He’s a venal moron with the vocabulary of the third-grader and the patience of a chihuahua and he convinced a sufficient number of voters to back him! Trump’s success has aroused the other billionaires’ natural competitiveness, making them think they can conjure an Electoral College miracle, too. The other appeal of the presidency for the end-stage billionaire is that it lends to them a seriousness of purpose. We live in an age where every event is a public relations campaign and where billionaires crave venues for status displays, be they Davos or Des Moines. Even people like Oprah Winfrey, who couldn’t be better known than she already is, can’t resist flirting with a presidential candidacy to see if they can become more notable. Nobody thought that Mark Zuckerberg would ever run for president when he took his “listening tour” in 2017, but that didn’t make the gesture futile. Performing against the political backdrop of meeting folks in the boonies—eating their food, attending their churches and watching them work on the shop floor—added a veneer of humanity to the charmless Zuck. Another reason the modern billionaire class entertains the idea of running is because a huge underemployed industrial class of consultants and advisers exists to encourage them. Last year, Politico’s Gabriel Debenedetti identified the many political pollsters and campaign strategists lining up, invoices in hand, to feed the plutocrats’ White House dreams. Thanks especially to Trump’s victory, it’s become easy money advising billionaires who hunger for White House validation. As for the press, there’s nothing political reporters love more than to chart the rise and fall of political outsiders. For them, the nascent campaign of Howard Schultz has been a feast. His campaign message is what? To bring America back together again?! C’mon, Howard, that’s got as much intellectual meat as one of those frosted cake pops. The downside of the billionaire primary is that in today’s climate, it can easily become a referendum on their wealth. Nobody is going to beat up on Bloomberg for exploiting the masses, because his business model was about exploiting the wealthy. But they will and have portrayed him as clueless, removed and too privileged to run as a Democrat. In the opening days of his precandidacy, Schultz strolled into Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s spinning social media blades. She successfully discounted him on Twitter as a political dilettant after he attacked her soak-the-rich tax policies. Schultz has taken additional beatings from liberals and lefties for his anti-union efforts at Starbucks and the low wages he pays. He’s a hypocrite, who trashes socialism but tried to get Seattle to subsidize his NBA team, the Seattle SuperSonics, by building a new arena. (When the city refused, he sold the team to out-of-towners who moved it to Oklahoma City.) Worse still, Schultz’s critics disparage his beloved coffee! The billionaire pile-up of Trump vs. Bloomberg vs. Schultz in November 2020 would be the ultimate money-politics event. But will it really happen? American voters are a fickle breed. In just one generation, they’ve gone from Clinton to Bush to Obama to Trump, oscillating from one kind of candidate to its near opposite. By Election Day, billionaires could enter political eclipse, thanks to Trump’s grandiosity, and voters could be persuaded to load the wealthy candidates in the tumbrels bound for the guillotine. Or the hard freeze of a massive financial downturn could arrive to take the glow off their gilt and boost somebody like Elizabeth Warren, who is already plotting tax war on the super-rich. From my perch, the best outcome of a Trump-Bloomberg-Schultz race would be a three-way tie in the Electoral College that would tip the election to the House of Representatives. I’d embrace anybody the House elected—as long as he (or she) was worth a billion. ****** Send billions of dollars to Shafer.Politico@gmail.com. My email alerts are supporting Bloomberg because he’s so charismatic. My Twitter feed is all in for Schultz because it thinks he’s the guy who drew “Peanuts.” My RSS feed is holding out for the first trillionaire. Senate rebukes Trump on Syria withdrawal plan

The Senate issued a rebuke of President Donald Trump Thursday after it agreed to move forward on an amendment from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) that cautioned against the “precipitous withdrawal” of U.S. troops from Syria and Afghanistan. In a 68-23 vote, Republicans and Democrats voted in favor of forwarding the amendment, which would be attached to a broader Middle East legislative package. In December, Trump announced unexpectedly that he would withdraw U.S. troops from Syria. His announcement prompted a bipartisan backlash from lawmakers as well as his own national security team. “It’s not a partisan amendment,” McConnell said prior to the vote Thursday. “It’s not complicated. There is no poison pill. Just an opportunity for senators to go on the record about what our country should be doing in Syria and Afghanistan.” The Senate will next vote on passage of the amendment. McConnell’s amendment wasn’t the only attempt to admonish the Trump administration on foreign policy in the Senate this week. In a separate initiative, Sens. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Mike Lee (R-Utah) reintroduced a resolution Wednesday to withdraw U.S. support from the Saudi-backed war in Yemen. The resolution passed the Senate in the previous Congress, 56-41, but was not taken up by the House. It gained momentum following the death of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Trump has been reluctant to implicate Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for the murder. Mueller’s team said Wednesday that “non-sensitive” evidence that had been shared exclusively with Concord’s U.S. law firm, Reed Smith LLP, ended up in an online file-sharing portal, apparently as a result of a hacking operation targeting the law firm. “We’ve got access to the Special Counsel Mueller’s probe database as we hacked Russian server with info from the Russian troll case Concord LLC v. ICE force-feeding detainees on hunger strike

Federal immigration officials are force-feeding six immigrants through plastic nasal tubes during a hunger strike that’s gone on for a month inside a Texas detention facility, The Associated Press has learned. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement says 11 detainees at the El Paso Processing Center have been refusing food, some for more than 30 days. Detainees who reached the AP, along with a relative and an attorney representing hunger strikers, said nearly 30 detainees from India and Cuba have been refusing to eat, and some are now so weak they cannot stand up or talk. Another four detainees are on hunger strikes in the agency’s Miami, Phoenix, San Diego and San Francisco areas of responsibility, said ICE spokeswoman Leticia Zamarripa on Wednesday. The men say they stopped eating to protest verbal abuse and threats of deportation from guards. They are also upset about lengthy lock ups while awaiting legal proceedings. In mid-January, two weeks after they stopped eating, a federal judge authorized force-feeding of some El Paso detainees, Zamarripa said. She did not immediately address the detainees’ allegations of abuse but did say the El Paso Processing Center would follow the federal standards for care. ICE officials say they closely monitor the food and water intake of detainees identified as being on a hunger strike to protect their health and safety. The men with nasal tubes are having persistent nose bleeds, and are vomiting several times a day, said Amrit Singh, whose two nephews from the Indian state of Punjab have been on hunger strike for about a month. “They are not well. Their bodies are really weak, they can’t talk and they have been hospitalized, back and forth,” said Singh, from California. “They want to know why they are still in the jail and want to get their rights and wake up the government immigration system.” Singh’s nephews are both seeking asylum. Court records show they pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge in September after illegally walking across the border near El Paso. There have been high-profile hunger strikes around the country at immigration detention centers in the past, and non-consensual feeding and hydration has been authorized by judges in court orders. Media reports and government statements don’t indicate immigration detainees actually underwent involuntary feeding in recent years, opting to end their hunger strikes when faced with nasal intubation. ICE did not immediately respond to queries about how often they are force-feeding detainees. To force-feed someone, medical experts typically wind a tube tightly around their finger to make it bend easily, and put lubricant on the tip, before shoving it into a patient’s nose. The patient has to swallow sips of water while the tube is pushed down their throat. It can be very painful. The El Paso detention facility, located on a busy street near the airport, is highly guarded and surrounded by chain-link fence. Ruby Kaur, a Michigan-based attorney representing one of the hunger strikers, said her client had been force-fed and put on an IV after more than three weeks without eating or drinking water. “They go on hunger strike, and they are put into solitary confinement and then the ICE officers kind of psychologically torture them, telling the asylum seekers they will send them back to Punjab,” Kaur said. Eiorjys Rodriguez Calderin, who on a call from the facility described himself as a Cuban dissident, said conditions in Cuba forced him and other detainees to seek safety in the U.S., and they risk persecution if they are deported. “They are restraining people and forcing them to get tubes put in their noses,” said Rodriguez, adding that he had passed his “credible fear” interview and sought to be released on parole. “They put people in solitary, as punishment.” Those “credible fear” interviews are conducted by immigration authorities as an initial screening for asylum requests. ICE classifies a detainee as a hunger striker after they refuse nine consecutive meals. Federal courts have not conclusively decided whether a judge must issue an order before ICE force-feeds an immigration detainee, so rules vary by district and type of court, and sometimes orders are filed secretly. In Tacoma, Washington, where immigration detainees have held high-profile hunger strikes in recent years, courts have ordered force-feeding at least six times, according to court records. In July 2017, a federal judge refused to allow ICE to restrain and force-feed a hunger striking Iraqi detainee who wanted to be housed with fellow Iraqi Chaldean Christians detained Arizona facility. Since May 2015, volunteers for the nonprofit Freedom for Immigrants have documented 1,396 people on hunger strike in 18 immigration detention facilities. “By starving themselves, these men are trying to make public the very suffering that ICE is trying keep hidden from taxpayers,” said Christina Fialho, director of the group. While court orders allowing force-feeding have been issued in cases involving inmates, Fialho couldn’t recall a situation when involuntary feeding actually occurred in immigration detention facilities because the inmates opted to eat. The force-feeding of detainees through nasal tubes at Guantanamo Bay garnered international blowback. Hunger strikes began shortly after the military prison opened in 2002, with force-feeding starting in early 2006 following mass refusals to eat. After four weeks without eating, the body’s metabolic systems start to break down, and hunger strikers can risk permanent damage, including cognitive impairment, said Dr. Marc Stern, a correctional physician at the University of Washington in Seattle who has previously consulted with the Department of Homeland Security. “You can become demented and lose coordination, and some of it is reversible, some of it isn’t,” Stern said. “The dangers are not just metabolic. If you are very weak, you could very simply get up to do something and fall and crack your skull.” Force-feeding raises ethics issues for medical professionals who work inside ICE facilities. The American Medical Association has expressed its concerns about physicians participating in the force-feeding of hunger strikers on multiple occasions, and its own principles of medical ethics state “a patient who has decision-making capacity may accept or refuse any recommended medical intervention.” The association also endorses the World Medical Association Declaration of Tokyo, which states that when prisoners refuse food and physicians believe they are capable of “rational judgment concerning the consequences of such a voluntary refusal of nourishment, he or she shall not be fed artificially.” Article originally published on POLITICO Magazine Source: https://politi.co/2UwkaCf Droolin’ Dog sniffed out this story and shared it with you.
