McDonald's is launching its own currency because of course

The Big Mac is turning 50 soon, and McDonald's is going to celebrate the way everything is celebrated in 2018: by releasing their own currency — though it comes with a twist. While crypto is a big thing these days, McDonald's is throwing a curveball into the self-release currency game by putting out an actual, physical coin called the "MacCoin." At least we know its exact value, though: one Big Mac, or about $3.99. SEE ALSO: Pornhub now allows payments from one specific cryptocurrency The MacCoin will be redeemable for a free Big Mac at "participating locations" across 50 countries. As for how to actually procure a MacCoin, though, the company is a wee bit more vague in a press release: "a variety of exciting giveaways with each participating country celebrating the arrival of the MacCoin in its own unique way." Flight MH370 report: 'unlawful interference by third party' not ruled out

Families’ hopes dashed as report fails to provide concrete conclusions for why plane disappeared in March 2014 A safety report into the disappearance of flight MH370 has concluded that the plane was manually turned around mid-air, rather than being under the control of autopilot, and that “unlawful interference by a third party” could not be ruled out. It also disproved theories that had suggested the pilot and first officer brought the plane down in a suicide mission, and accusations of mechanical failure. Ruth Bader Ginsburg: I have 'at least five more years' on the bench

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said Sunday that she intends to serve “at least five more years,” a stretch that would extend her career beyond her 90th birthday. "I'm now 85," Ginsburg said, according to CNN. "My senior colleague, Justice John Paul Stevens, he stepped down when he was 90, so think I have about at least five more years." Ginsburg, nominated by former President Bill Clinton and confirmed to the Supreme Court in 1993, is the court’s oldest justice and is also among its most liberal. Her future on the bench has been the subject of significant speculation because her departure during President Donald Trump’s term would afford him the opportunity to appoint a third Supreme Court justice, shifting the court’s balance of power for years, and potentially decades, to come. Trump campaigned hard on a promise to nominate only conservative judges, pledging to pick Supreme Court nominees only from a preordained list vetted with the help of conservative groups like the Federalist Society and the Heritage Foundation. He has thus far made good on that promise, placing Justice Neil Gorsuch on the bench to fill the seat left vacant by Antonin Scalia and nominating Brett Kavanaugh to replace the retiring Anthony Kennedy. Ginsburg, speaking Sunday in New York after a performance of “The Originalist,” a play about Scalia, ruled out the possibility of placing term limits on judges because to do so would require a constitutional amendment. “We hold our offices during good behavior,” she said, “and most judges are very well behaved.” She also offered an optimistic note for those who hold similar views to her own in response to a question about what kept her “hopeful.” "My dear spouse would say that the true symbol of the United States is not the bald eagle — it is the pendulum," Ginsburg said. "And when it goes very far in one direction, you can count on its swinging back." source: https://ift.tt/2Lzv8am #Headlines by: lnelson@politico.com (Louis Nelson) Original Post: https://ift.tt/2Lzv8am https://ift.tt/2NYHK7N

Trump tariffs assailed at Koch network gathering

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Top officials from the powerful Koch network warned President Donald Trump’s tariffs — and his divisive governing style — stand to create “long-term damage” to the country as donors assembled here to kick off their twice-yearly confab Saturday. The network, helmed by billionaire Charles Koch, fired the warning shots after weeks of tension with the White House over Trump’s tariffs, which are in opposition to the Koch network's free-market worldview. “The divisiveness of this White House is causing long-term damage,” said Brian Hooks, one of Charles Koch’s top deputies, during a briefing for reporters. “When in order to win on an issue someone else has to lose, it makes it very difficult to unite people and solve the problems in this country. You see that on trade: In order to get to a good place on trade, convince the American people that trade is bad.” A video produced by the Koch network focused on the dangers of anti-free-trade sentiment across the country. In it, Charles Koch warned the current “rise in protectionism” represents a “a natural tendency, but it’s a destructive one.” A failure to embrace innovation has “doomed many,” Koch warns, while images of shuttered Blockbuster video and Borders books stores flashed on the screen. Koch leads the influential network, which consists of conservative donors who pay a minimum of $100,000 each year. At their donor confab six months earlier, Koch officials had lavished praise on Trump and congressional Republicans for passing a tax-reform package, a long-term goal of Republican donors like the Kochs. This weekend, Hooks said there was a “lack of leadership” on trade and other issues that includes “the White House and a number of politicians who are following that lead.” Koch officials called on Washington politicians to strike more bargains and build more coalitions across the aisle, which, they said, the Koch network is working to do on immigration and prison reform. However, the Koch network is not changing its plans to spend $400 million during the 2018 midterms, officials said. The gathering marks the first time donors are convening since David Koch left the network in June. Charles Koch, 82, joked to donors about his good health — and commitment to his conservative network — during a lakeside cocktail reception. “In case I looked like I was weaker, I assure you: I am not getting weak in the knees,” he said. source: https://ift.tt/2LZTpTc #Headlines by: mseverns@politico.com (Maggie Severns) Original Post: https://ift.tt/2LZTpTc https://ift.tt/2mPWHx6

Governor's race could pit Trump surrogate vs. #MeToo supporter, poll shows

Republican Ron DeSantis and Democrat Gwen Graham have solid leads in their party’s respective primaries for governor, according to a new poll that foreshadows a general election pitting the candidate of President Donald Trump against the candidate of women’s issues. DeSantis, a two-term member of Congress, has had a meteoric rise in the GOP primary, pulling to a 41-29 percent lead over Florida Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam, thanks in large part to Trump’s support, the Mason-Dixon Polling & Research survey showed. Trump will campaign for DeSantis on Tuesday in Tampa, the center of the state’s largest media market. Graham, a former member of Congress, has 27 percent support in her primary against four men and leads the second-place Democrat, former Miami Beach mayor Philip Levine, by 9 percentage points, according to the survey. Saying that the race consists of “Gwen and the men,” Graham has made abortion rights and support of the #MeToo movement central to her campaign. “If this is the way the general turns out, this will be a race that’s all about the national dynamic for Democrats to motivate the women’s vote against Trump because of his positions and what he has said,” Brad Coker, Mason-Dixon pollster, told POLITICO. “Having a woman candidate face off against Trump’s guy is the beating heart of the type of campaigns that Democrats are counting on,” Coker said. While there’s still time for anything to happen ahead of the Aug. 28 primary, the Republican race has been more stable than the Democratic contest. DeSantis has steadily picked up support that finally reached a tipping point when Trump endorsed him last month. For the primary match-ups, Coker surveyed 500 Democrats and 500 Republicans. The poll has an error margin of 4.5 percentage points. Because the races still are fluid and have so many candidates, Coker didn’t survey general election head-to-head match-ups. Instead, he polled each candidate’s favorability ratings. And right now Graham looks like a stronger contender heading into a general election, Coker said. She is the best-known and best-liked candidate in the race, with 35 percent having a favorable impression of her while only 5 percent have a negative view of her, making her net favorable rating 30 percent. DeSantis’ net favorable rating is 11 percent, with 32 percent viewing him favorably but 21 percent unfavorably. Putnam’s net favorable rating is 10 percent, a sign that the $20 million ad campaign run on his behalf and the additional $4.8 million in outside spending trained on DeSantis have had little effect. The numbers stand out even more because Putnam has been elected statewide twice and has continually held various elected offices in the state for 21 years. DeSantis’ camp has spent $9.7 million on TV, less than half of what Putnam’s team has spent on air, plus an additional $399,000 attacking Putnam. The spending has been far bigger on the Democratic side because of the presence of Levine, a multimillionaire, and Jeff Greene, a billionaire who quickly climbed to third place with 12 percent on the strength of a $10.2 million TV ad campaign in about five weeks. Levine has spent about $15 million in eight months, and Graham about $4.7 million in about two months. “Levine had been running about even with Graham until Greene jumped in. Both men have extremely similar profiles — politically experienced, successful business owners who are white, male, Jewish and from South Florida,” Coker said in a polling memo. “They each have tremendous personal wealth that gives them the ability to put a considerable amount of their own money into their campaigns. With this overlapping appeal, the two are drawing a combined 30% of voters — slightly more than Graham.” Rounding out the Democratic primary, Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, the only non-millionaire and African-American in the race, polled at 10 percent. He just started an undefined “six-figure” TV ad buy. And Orlando businessman Chris King is at 7 percent and has spent $4.1 million on TV. Coker said that Graham is “benefiting as the only female candidate, receiving the support of 30 percent of Democratic women” and that she also has highest name recognition —79 percent — and the highest favorable rating, 45 percent, among Democrats. Unlike any of the Democrats in the race, Graham also can take a political punch. A so-called “dark money” group fueled with secret donations spent as much as $1.1 million attacking her as a phony progressive, and it made almost no difference, Coker said. “Graham’s numbers have only gone up. She’s finally got her act together,” Coker said. “If she gets passed the primary and gets to the general election, she’ll be tough. She has the highest favorable and the lowest negatives. She is set up pretty well in the general.” Read the poll's details here. source: https://ift.tt/2LvNZ60 #Headlines by: mcaputo@politico.com (Marc Caputo) Original Post: https://ift.tt/2AfeRlp https://ift.tt/2mNDuMB

Corals host single-celled, photosynthetic symbiotes called zooxanthellae that provide food in exchange for shelter. During a heat wave, the corals are forced to kick the zooxanthellae out (lest the coral be poisoned by their stressed excretions), losing the corals' source of food as well as the majority of their color—hence the name “coral bleaching”. If the warm water stays too long, the corals starve and leave behind lifeless carbonate skeletons. Young corals may repopulate the area in time, although algae will often claim the abandoned structures in the meanwhile. The last few years have hit Australia’s Great Barrier Reef pretty hard, with a massive bleaching event in 2016 and persistently elevated temperatures giving no respite—part of a trend in a warming climate. A team led by the University of Tasmania’s Rick Stuart-Smith hit the water almost a year after the bleaching to get a first look at the recovery process. Judge won't order disclosure of Trump White House visitor logs

A federal judge has rejected a bid by several public interest groups to force release of a broad set of logs of visitors to the Trump White House. In a ruling Thursday, U.S. District Court Judge Katherine Failla declined to depart from a 2013 federal appeals court decision that found visitor records for the Obama White House were not subject to disclosure under the Freedom of Information Act. As a Manhattan-based judge, Failla was not obligated to follow the 2013 opinion from the D.C. Circuit, but most judges defer to that court on FOIA matters and she chose to do so in the legal fight over the White House logs. The National Security Archive, the Knight First Amendment Institute and Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington filed suit last year in an effort to get details on who was visiting the Trump White House, as well as other places frequented by the president, such as his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. Lawyers for the groups contended that the visitor records effectively belong to the Secret Service, which uses them to vet visitors and to admit them to the White House. However, Failla ruled that changes the Obama White House imposed on handling of the records in 2015 "reinforced the conclusion" that the records are presidential files beyond the reach of FOIA. "The Secret Service’s ability to utilize and dispose of these records is subject to constraints imposed by the White House that were not present" in 2013, Failla wrote in her 70-page opinion. Failla said that although core White House offices are entitled to keep their visitors secret, the Secret Service is still obligated to release visitor records for several parts of the Executive Office of the President that are subject to FOIA, like the Office of Management and Budget and the Office of National Drug Control Policy. The Trump administration settled a similar lawsuit in February by agreeing to disclose many of the visits to those offices. Some such records began emerging in April, but there some ambiguity remained about how the settlement would be interpreted. Knight Institute lawyer Alex Abdo expressed disappointment in Failla's decision. "The purpose of the Freedom of Information Act is to expose the workings of our government to public scrutiny, and there are few records as important to that purpose as those showing who wields influence over the president," Abdo said via email Thursday night. "Although the court recognized that some visitor logs must be disclosed by the Executive Office of the President, we’re disappointed the court did not order the release of the White House's visitor logs — a decision contrary both to FOIA and to the public interest." An attorney for CREW, Anne Weismann, said her group was considering its options to respond to the ruling. The Justice Department declined to comment, and the White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Efforts to seek details on Trump's visitors at Mar-a-Lago have been largely unsuccessful, with the Secret Service maintaining that there is little information on who saw him there, particularly during his early visits as president. source: https://ift.tt/2mP9TCl #Headlines by: jgerstein@politico.com (Josh Gerstein) Original Post: https://ift.tt/2mP9TCl https://ift.tt/2AessJS
